NHK apologized on the 22nd for the issue of a Chinese staff member making a statement on the 19th of this month in Chinese news on international radio broadcasts and other channels that differed from the official view of the Japanese government, calling it an "extremely serious situation." The company also announced on its official website that it had terminated its contract with the staff member on the 21st.

According to the announcement, the staff member had signed a contract with an NHK-related organization and had been in charge of NHK work since 2002. NHK took the remarks seriously, and after strongly protesting to the staff member through the organization, terminated the contract. They will also file a claim for damages and "deal strictly" with the matter, including considering filing a criminal complaint.

The problematic remarks were made on the 19th during a Chinese news program broadcast on NHK's shortwave radio and international satellite radio stations, as well as Radio 2 (1:01-1:15 pm), after a Chinese male staff member in his 40s reported that "graffiti was found at Yasukuni Shrine and the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating it as a case of vandalism."

In Chinese, he said, "The Diaoyu Islands and their associated islands have been Chinese territory since ancient times. We protest against NHK's historical revisionism and unprofessional work," and made statements that were not in the script, including stating that the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture are Chinese territory. He also repeated in English, "Don't forget the Nanjing Massacre. Don't forget the comfort women. They were wartime sex slaves. Don't forget Unit 731."

NHK responded by announcing that it had made a disclaimer and apology on its Chinese news broadcasts on shortwave and satellite radio on the 19th (8:30 p.m.) and on Radio 2 the following day (1:01 p.m.), and posted the disclaimer and apology on its Chinese news site. The issue was also reported on News Watch 9 (9 p.m.) and international radio on the 19th, as well as on Radio 1 (10 p.m.) on the same day.

As a measure to prevent recurrence, NHK announced that it would broadcast pre-recorded Chinese news on international radio from the 20th, and that it would "switch to pre-recording within this month" for other languages. It also stated that it would "consider introducing AI voice if necessary." It then stated, "We will create a review system headed by the vice president, and will not only take short-term measures, but will also formulate medium-term measures to prevent recurrence, such as strengthening the management system, and strengthen governance regarding international broadcasting, in order to restore trust."

As details of the issue became clear, online comments such as "this is broadcast hijacking" and "this is not a problem that can be solved with an apology" erupted. Politicians and celebrities also posted critical comments one after another. Liberal Democratic Party Senator Masamune Wada updated X on the 22nd, writing, "The broadcast was taken over and content contrary to the facts was broadcast. This is a serious incident for which the president of NHK should take responsibility."
