Second infant feared dead, search begins on Bow River
CALGARY (Alberta.com) ・A grim search for a second, and presumed dead infant, was underway Thursday afternoon on the Bow River in Calgary, police said. The search is connected to the discovery of another child, found dead in an apartment near downtown, earlier this week.
Rie Fujii, 23, has been arrested in connection with the death of her 15- month-old son, Dominic Ryu Brown, whose body was discovered on the floor of a bedroom in an appartment suite at 126 14th Ave. S.E. Fujii turned herself into police on Wednesday after apparently spending time with friends in Cochrane.
Police said investigations revealed Fujii also had a three-month-old daughter, Gemini.
”It is suspected that Gemini’s body may have been sealed in plastic bags and placed in the Bow River at the helipad, located at 1st Ave. and 8th St. S.W. sometime over the past two weeks,” police said in a statement issued Thursday as they began a search on the banks of the river.
Police said Gemini was wearing a yellow terry sleeper, a pink dress and was wrapped in a sleeping blanket.
The Calgary Fire Department, members of the Calgary Police Service Mounted Patrol and K-9 Unit began the search for the infant at noon.
Investigators are attempting to contact anyone who may have assisted Fujii in raising her children. Fujii has been in Calgary for about four years. She is not a Canadian citizen and entered the country on a student visa, said police.
She has been charged with neglecting to bury a dead human body in connection with the death of Dominic and is scheduled to appear in provincial court on Friday. Police said Thursday more charges could be laid, depending on results of further investigations.
Dominic was discovered after the landlordof the building arrived to collect a rent cheque and noticed a pungent smell. Neighbours have said they heard the baby crying persistently in recent weeks. The crying stopped abruptly, they said.
Police said Dominic was found on a bedroom floor. There was no furniture in the apartment. The cause of death has not been revealed.
The identity of the father has not been revealed. However, QR77 radio reported that the father is believed to be a local.
