Spouses (wife, husband or common-law partner) and dependents who come to Canada with a foreign worker need to have their own work permit if they want to work in Canada. In many cases, you may apply for a work permit without having to obtain an HRDC job confirmation. Learn more about the Spousal Program here.
Spousal Program Before your spouse may apply for a work permit without an HRDC confirmation, you must meet two requirements:
1.You must be authorized to work in Canada for six months or longer. 2.The work you are doing must meet a minimum skill level (usually work which would require at least a college diploma.) Specifically, your job must be listed in Skill Level O, A or B in the National Occupational Classification. If you meet these two requirements your spouse may apply for a work permit which is “open” and will allow them to accept any job depending on whether or not a medical exam was taken.
