You cant use ”Kept”or ”keep”because this describes a continuing action that is controlled by the actor (hit album). The hit album does not decide to stay at No 1 on the charts - this position is decided by the people. So it stayed there until they decided that it was not No 1 anymore.
So ”stay” is the best word to use as it describes the position but does not suggest that the No 1 album controls its position.
