The stain is the result of reaction between the low pH water and the copper pipe, which dissolves copper into the water. It is more obvious from the hot water pipes than the cold water pipes. The stain can be removed by using normal household stain removal cleaner, such as, Spic & Span, Tilex, etc. Lowering the temperature of the hot water can also aleviate the staining problem.
GVRD is in the process of raising the pH of the water at the sources as part of their Drinking Water Treatment Program to control the corrosion problems. Once it is fully implemented, the staining problems should be eliminated.
- Are there any health concerns associated with copper leaching from water pipe?
Copper is not a health concern. Leaching and concentrating copper occur when water is left standing overnight or during the day for periods greater than six to eight hours. By letting the tap run for 15 to 30 seconds before use can ensure your water will meet the Health Canada aesthetic guideline for copper in drinking water. To avoid waste, save water for plant watering.
