Andy Rooney’s Tips for Handling Telemarketers

(1) Here are three little words that work: ”Hold On, Please...” Saying
this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of
hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more
time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt. Then, when
you eventually hear the phone company’s ”beep-beep-beep” tone, you know
it’s time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently
completed its task. These three little words will help eliminate
telephone soliciting.
(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the
other end? This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone
calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone. This
technique is used to determine the best time of day for a ”real” sales
person to call back and get someone at home. What you can do after
answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start
hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as
possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks
your number out of their system. Since doing this, my phone calls have
decreased dramatically.
(3) Another Good Idea: When you get ”ads” enclosed with your phone or
utility bill, return these ”ads” with your payment. Let the sending
companies throw their own junk mail away. When you get those
”pre-approved” letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to
2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return
envelope. Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right?
If you use their prepaid postage envelope to send something back, it
costs them more than the regular 37 cents postage. It costs them nothing
if you throw the envelope away! The postage was around 50 cents before
the last increase and the cost is according to weight. In that case,
why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool
little, postage-paid return envelopes. One of Andy Rooney’s (60 minutes)
ideas. Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express.
Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn’t get anything else that
day, then just send them their blank application back!
If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn’t on
anything you send them. You can even send the envelope back empty if you
want to just to keep them guessing! Eventually, the banks and credit
card companies will begin getting their own junk back in the mail. Let’s
let them know what it’s like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all
they’re paying for it...Twice! Let’s help keep our postal service busy
since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business
profits, and that’s why they need to increase postage costs again.

I have been doing this for years, and I get very little junk mail
anymore.

(1)だけど、聞いたところによると、テレマーケティングの人たちは契約報酬以外に、電話が何分つながってたか（何分しゃべったか）の報酬があるらしいので、相手に稼がせたくなければすぐに切ってしまうほうが効くかも。 　

１と、３試してみます、
面倒で、しかも子供が電話に出たがったため、子供に電話の相手をさせた事があります。すぐ切れたみたい
２、なるほどねぇ・・・・。

でも一度TELUSのADSLからかかってきたときに
｢どーせあんたたちインターネットのモデムをタダではくれないんでしょ?」
と言ったら
｢今キャンペーン中なのでタダであげます。」
と言われたときには、正直焦りましたが。(笑）
普段は｢興味ありません｣と言ってガチャンと切っちゃうんですけどね。 　

When I get the annoying calls,I always ask who’s calling and say ”sorry you got the wrong #’.’cause my name is hard to pronounce for English speakers.Then hung up.how about this idea?

私も試してみよかな。２０代後半の時、テレマーケティングの人からの電話で、“MomかDadいる？”と聞かれたことがあります。失礼な人だと思いながらも、“今いないよ”と答えたことがあります。　私は、こういう電話は苦手です。でも、テレマーケティングの仕事してる人って大変だと思う。。。 　

相手が私の苗字を知っていて名指しでかかってきた場合は She/he is not here. で切り抜けます。いつ帰ってくるかを聞かれても I have no idea. で終わり。
また相手が勝手にしゃべりだした場合は、しばらくしゃべらしておいて「ノー、イングリッシュ」と言います。これはききますね。向こうからガチャンされます。

私の友達のバツイチ男性、
「奥さんいらっしゃいますか」というテレマーケティングの電話に、
「いないよ。昔はいたけどな。」と答えたら、
電話の向こうで息を呑む音が聞こえたそうです。 　

３は要注意、最近のリターンエンベロープにはロケーターコード番号とバーコードが印刷されているのでリターンアドレス無しでも相手には誰が送り返したかわかる。
おそらく２もソフトを変更してちゃんと記録してあると考えられる
スパムやコンピューターバイラスと同じでシステムの弱点をうまくついてくる
早くコミュニケーション技術のセキュリティが高くなることを望む 　

うちの義父の話。しつこい店員が”Can I help you?”と義父の所へ寄ってきた。そこで義父”Do you have money?”と聞き返し、”No”と答えた店員。”Then you can’t help me.”と言うとさすがにしつこいセールスマンも寄ってこなくなったと自慢げに話してました。トピずれでごめんなさい。
　

いろんなコメントをどうもありがとう！

テレマーケター自体に恨みはないし，どうしてそういう職業に付いたにしろ、他人が嫌がる事をするのは精神衛生上良くないだろうな，，，，と同情したりする質なので、長期戦でもそういう押し売り宣伝に効果がなくなるよう，企業自体に何らかの反撃を与える手段としてこのtipsは実行の価値があるような気がします．（１）はなるべく自分の時間を費やさずにラインをキープして，相手の電話件数を減らすことで最終的に企業の売り上げ低下を目論む作戦です．ただで子供さんのおしゃべり相手になってもらえたら一石二鳥ですね！

（３）だとバーコード等で誰だかわかるようになっている，とは知りませんでした．でももしわかって、ジャンクメールのブラックリストに載ることでもう何も送られて来ないなら悪くないですね．私には思い付かないのですが，その他の弊害が生じるのでしたら教えて下さい．
