KoiBanana-no osusume: the Italian cafes on Commercial Drive.
Twenty years ago, Canadians hardly knew anything about gourmet coffee. There were no coffee shops all over the place like now. The Canadian idea of coffee was to put a tablespoon of Nescafe crystals into a cup, cover with hot water from an electric kettle, then add Coffee Mate and gobs of sugar.
In early 1990-something, the "Starbucks virus" appeared, eventually followed by various imitators.
But it was possible to drink "oishii koohii" on Commercial Drive long before that. It is where I was introduced to great coffee.
When Starbucks came along, my coffee-drinking friends and I couldn't believe how bad it was. The whole business idea depended on North American ignorance about coffee. (Italians even have a name for a poor-tasting, cheap cup of drip coffee: "Americano"!)
The most important factor in coffee is that roasted coffee must be consumed within about two weeks of being roasted. Roasted coffee quickly loses aroma.
