カルガリー事件を思い出しました。本当に近くの家でびっくりしました。何ビザでカナダで何をしてたんだろう。そして他の人は誰も妊娠に気づかなかったのかな。。。
A 20-year-old mother is in custody facing criminal charges after her newborn baby was found dead in the Saanich home where she rented a room.
Narumi Bito has been charged with disposing of the dead body of a child with intent to conceal the fact that she had delivered the baby. It’s alleged the baby was hidden inside a plastic bag on Sept. 17.
Bito is also accused of "failing to make provision for reasonable assistance for the delivery of said child that died immediately after birth."
Saanich police were called to a house at 3846 Saanich Rd. at 9:30 a.m. Monday, after receiving a call from the house. Inside, the baby was found dead.
Police spokesman Sgt. Dean Jantzen would not say what gender the child is or where in the house the infant was found. His or her precise age isn’t known although Jantzen described the baby as a newborn.
An autopsy will be done in the next couple of days to determine cause of death. The current charges are preliminary, pending the outcome of that autopsy. The charges could change.
Bito was arrested without incident on Monday and was remanded in custody until Friday, when she is to appear in Victoria provincial court. A Japanese-speaking interpreter is to attend court to assist her.
"She is a very frightened and confused young woman," said her lawyer Mayland McKimm. "We don’t really know what happened yet. She speaks virtually no English and agreed to be remanded in custody while we determine our next steps."
McKimm pointed out that neither of the current charges accuse Bito of killing her child and that it could possibly have been stillborn.
"We just don’t know yet."
The baby was dead when police went to the house Monday morning. They got a search warrant for the house, and other occupants of the house have co-operated with police, Jantzen said.
The recently-renovated house, which has a view of Swan Lake, is owned by Gayle Floyd, who sometimes rents out rooms to international students, say neighbours.
Two young women were rooming in the house, said neighbour Rod Toth.
"I saw the students walking on a trail a couple weeks ago," said Toth. He didn’t notice if either was pregnant.
Saanich police are investigating with the B.C. Coroner’s Service.
Police have assured neighbours that they are not in danger.
"The community is not at risk and we are not presently seeking the whereabouts of any other person," Jantzen said.
