But honestly, that’s how I feel towards Canadians.
It seems that people are superfically being nice ("I love all of you guys!!" etc.) when they actually meet, but often here people saying things behind their backs.
I assume it derives from some sort of cultural/linguistic gap. You just can’t figure out someone’s "honne" unless you live in that environment and culture for a long time.
Meanwhile, we should all try to broaden our mind and be more self-reflective.

わたしもこのトピ主さんは日本人だと思います。
使っているPCが日本語環境でないため、ローマ字で書くより英語で書いたんだと思います。
Res10さんの意見と似ていますが、わたしも結構カナダに出てきてから日本人を見直したし、自分の生まれた国にも誇りを持てるようになりました。誇りもっているっていっても右翼じゃないですけどｗｗｗ
なんか、日本で作られたものとかカナダで活躍していたり、日本の会社の名前が日常生活に浸透していたり、世界に通用する日本製品は優秀で日本人の勤勉さを尊敬しますよ。

I usually don’t post a comment on a thread like this, but I just can’t help it. These people (including the one who started this thread) are clearly very angry. I assume they probably had some negative experience with the Japanese people, and they just want to let out some steam. And it’s easy to do so in a forum like this, because nobody can really track them down and find out who they are.

But what I want to say to these people is, why waste your time posting these inflammatory comments in a Japanese forum? Clearly you are expecting some negative reactions, or maybe trying to spark racial hatred. I suppose you just want to verify your belief that the Japanese are all backstabbing liars who don’t give a shit about other people’s feelings. I must agree that I am also sometimes disappointed to see some nasty comments thrown in just for the heck of it, but if you think about it, it’s almost universal. Have you visited any other forums? I came across stuff like that in almost every forum I visited, not just the Japanese ones. There is a reason why there is a moderator in every forum.

Seeing that all your arguments on the politics, etc. are very generalized (It’s all been said and heard before) and nothing concrete, I assume you just want to hurt the feelings of the Japanese people (at least the users of this forum) because you feel hurt. I am sorry that you had a hard time before, but if you stop lashing out and move on, I can assure you that you’ll find some really nice Japanese people out there. Don’t let your negative experience skew your perspectives - it’ll hurt you even more in the long run, missing out on all the fun waiting for you. I learned it the hard way myself. I hope you’ll soon realize that life is too short to waste on something like this. 　

I agree with Res25.
It’s always the few bad people who put down the entire image of a specific culture.
I know there are disgusting topics on this site, and some malicious comments, but I hope majority of people don’t just believe the negative things like that as a whole picture.

I was first disappointed to read this, because it had negative assumptions about Japanese people, such as `THEY can’t do ANYTHING in the front’ Who does THEY mean? What does ANYTHING mean in particular? It is as if saying ALL Japanese cannot do ANYTHING AT ALL, which is absolutely untrue. Any Japanese can do something just like any Korean can do something, right!? Having had uncomfortable experiences with Japanese people, or reading a negative response about Korean people on this website, you might be mad about Japanese people, but I don’t want you to look at Japanese as‘in general.’ Even though not all of us Japanese are good people, not all of us are bad either. There might be some stupid as you said, but it would be unjust as well as make some people uncomfortable to blame all Japanese people without obvious reason as to why you are right enough to complain about Japanese. If I were to say, `I hate Korean just because they can’t do anything, and are stupid as well’, how would you feel?? That’s exactly what you were doing to us.
As for HONNE and TATEMAE, I would say it is not even good enough to explain in a word as only Japanese culture has that kind of concept. Even for me, who have spent more than 20 years in Japan and have seen hole bunch of Japanese culture, HONNE and TATEMAE are too complex to be explained. I tried to make you understand what HONNE and TATEMAE really are, but still found it so hard that I quoted a good explanation from a book that I have. Here is the broad meaning of HONNE and TATEMAE;
Japanese people have had to live in small communities peacefully and harmoniously because of the geographical and historical situation of Japan, and it had a strong influence on human relationships. For example, when expressing HONNE (honest feelings) might hurt or offend others, TATEMAE (official stance) is expressed instead to keep peace in a community. This produced the custom of avoiding mention of HONNE that is different from what everyone else has expressed and adjusting to TATEMAE, and it provided the reason for criticizing the Japanese people for not readily expressing their opinions. However, most Japanese refrain from expressing HONNE more than self-expression.
I don’t even think that I was able to interpret this explanation entirely by myself, but at least I understand that we have TATEMAE for keeping people and community peacefully. We might be doing this kind of things unconsciously, just as I beat around the bush rather than getting to the point even when I speak in English. This is because I’m afraid of making others uncomfortable because of what I say, and need a bit of time in choosing appropriate words to say... If some Japanese are saying something bad, that would rather be a compliment, not HONNE any more, in that HONNE should be kept inside ourselves in general. Instead, it would be GUCHI if you ask me. It doesn’t matter whether or not our face is hidden. If HONNE is expressed in a written words or spoken words, there’s no point to say HONNE. It’s actually a matter of how we feel and why we need to stop expressing every single feelings that we have. You won’t be able to understand what I mean unless you know Japanese culture better than Japanese do.
I really don’t care how you feel about what I’ve said so far, since I believe nothing would make you feel better as long as you have a bad image on Japanese people. But I just wanted to let you know that there’s something more that you should know and think about before merely complaining about people and culture of different countries without knowing them.
