RCMP Officer accused in fatal crash also involved in death of Robert Dziekanski at YVR
10/28/2008
The RCMP officer facing charges in a fatal crash in Delta was one of the Mounties involved in the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski a year ago.
The officer’s name has not been released and he has not been charged in either the accident or the Dziekanski case, in which the Polish man was jolted with a Taser at Vancouver International Airport.
However, it’s expected he will be charged with impaired driving in Saturday night’s accident in which a Jeep struck and killed 21-year-old motorcyclist Orion Hutchinson.
Police say the driver of the Jeep failed a breathalyzer test and faces at least two charges, but it’s expected he won’t be formally charged until his first court appearance in January.
The officer is with the Olympic Integrated Security Unit but was off-duty at the time of the crash.
R-C-M-P Sergeant Tim Shields says the officer has been suspended with pay, and in addition to the criminal investigation by Delta police, the Mounties are conducting their own internal code of conduct investigation.
