I am amazed stuff like this gets on the Japanese news. To tell you the truth, Japanese is not a really complicated language and of course if you live here for a while you are going to pick some of it up. Why do Japanese people get freaked out or amazed when a foreign person acts a little Japanese or knows about Japanese culture? You never see Western people saying, "Oh my god! Did you see that Japanese person speaking English? Amazing!!" or "Wow did you see that Japanese person wearing hip-hop fashion? He must want to be American."
I live in Japan now and I am shocked about how people get freaked out or suprised because I can speak Japanese. I don’t see what the big deal is.

To res 2:
I get the same kind of response when I speak English in Canada. "Wow, your English is almost perfect!" "You are very westernized/Canadianized!" etc. I don’t know what the big deal is, as I have lived in Canada for more than a decade. English is relatively easy to learn compared to some other languages. In my opinion, the reason why Japanese language is generally considered difficult or complex is due to the fact that it is highly context dependent. One word could mean many different things depending on the context and that’s why it is difficult to master. English, on the other hand, is less context dependent.
Another thing is that there are many people who live in Japan who never bother to learn the language. It is sad but true. So when "foreigners" are fluent in Japanese, they are pleasantly surprized, as it shows that those people actually took the time to learn the language, and more likely, the culture as well.
