Why Vancouver?
by Morgan from 無回答 2005/06/24 06:57:46

Hello friends & freaks out there, i have never been to Canada (yet?) but i have many Japanese friends almost everytime they go Vancouver? i dont understand what so great about Vancouver? i hear montreal is good city & looks European style & Victoria i heard looks old too,i saw many pictures of Vancouver & i think looks so so, but just a modern kinda city without so much historic buildings? and many Hong kong,Chinese,Korean & Japanese & middle east? so i cant understand what would be such a great experience if your asian to go another country and experience seeing so many asian people? where is the Canadian city’s with so many Canadian’s not so much french influence? i want to go where i can see pure Canadian stuff? can u tell me whats Big deal with Vancouver? and where i should go for pure Canadian experience?

Res.1 by 無回答 from バンクーバー 2005/06/24 10:12:39

1) Vancouver has both ocean AND mountain. Whistler is the biggest ski resort. Sports lovers love Vancouver because of that.

2) Climate. Asians including Japanese love Vancouver because of not-too-hot/humid summer and not-too-cold/dry winter.

3) Closest Canadian city to Asia. Feel comfortable that you can access to your home country with just one flight.

4) Most Japanese don’t speak French and don’t even intend to study the language. French-spoken cities are attractive to visit but not to live (for at least for me.)

5) Lastly, coming to Vancouver and being in mixed cutlre IS a great experience. Hong Kong/Korean/Taiwan/China/India.... how much of them do we really know? Of course there are many European too. We see first nations too. We can see all of them in one city.
If you feel missing out, just choose other city where you think is the best, but you have to understand that different people feel differently. People choose Vancouver for many different reasons (which you might not understand), and they usually travel around Canada while they live in Vancouver to see many different cities anyway.
Res.2 by Maria from 無回答 2005/06/24 11:53:39

↑ Yes 、You are right.
Everybody is different. If you do not think for you.
Just you do not visit. That is simple.
Japanese people like or not, That is not your business as well.
That is Canada. Each person has right to say anything.
You can not put only your way or you think.
If you think not right place to visit you can go another place. But, most people like Vancouver. It is not only Japanese people. From Chaina, Taiwan , Hong Kong, India, Euorop, etc....
It is so many people happy to live in Vancouver and proud themself. If you see vancouver, may you like it.
Good luck your life.
Just be happy. ok?

Res.5 by 無回答 from 無回答 2005/06/25 10:26:38

Well Morgan, you have see it by your self...
Nobody could know what can make you feel "This is Pure Canada!"

For me, there’s tons of place and senes I can feel pure Canada.
Because I’m here to experience everything in Canadian way, and want to know how things work here.
I guess your not tring to see the good side of Vancouver aren’t you? OR your recerch about this city is maybe not enough.
You know, each persons sence of values and point of view is different.

So, all you need to do is,
Just go and visit, buddy!

Then, you must have something smells like Pure Canada!!
Res.6 by 無回答 from バンクーバー 2005/06/25 10:45:26

Work, study, Safe, clean air, healthy food & living style, green trees and mountain, and multiculture etc...
Everyone has reasons and preference where to live. I do not understand why people want to live in US.
You may not like Vancouver, but it is nice place for me by and large. Where do you live?

Res.7 by 無回答 from 無回答 2005/06/25 12:46:02

You can not say anything without real see.!

But, So many people same way which I felt. That’s way people want to live in this country.May be you too?.

Hi you lucky people living in Canada, I live in Japan now Osaka its also nice city but can’t se mountains or green tree’s so much that’s too bad i think? yes i will experience Canada for myself ne day hopefully soon, i Can’t wait see them Big tree’s and Mountain’s in England are mountains are so small mostly hills really, only few mountain & not so Big the biggest is in Scotland and thats only 1000 metres small compared to Japan as well as canada, I lived in Kawaguchiko before ( fuji san) and i saw bear in the mountain it ws very scary i saw black bear & i had nowhere to hide i was lucky it didnt eat me ha ha,but im really interested about Big bear’s in north Canda i wish to see one without been in same situation next time, because i heard about the Biggest bears up i nthe north are called kodiak bear’s or something?? and there 12 feet when they stand up? how amazing & how scary to imagine? i read on internet pepper spray is only 70% safe & they can still attack back? so no way is so safe against bears they are very smart aren’t they? it scare’S me to think they are faster than us & can climb tree’s too what can we do but be there lunch? take care if you go bear country, i ran so fast down mountain to escape by Bear experience in Japan thats amazing because everyone told me it’S so rare to see a bear in Japan? so when i go Canada one day mayb i will meet my fear i na bigger way?? anyone with bear stories or great viewning lets hear about it lots? Teddy bear’s are much more cute than reality :p

hey dude, I think that there is no "pure Canada". study Canadian history, and you’ll see. people livin here are mostly immigrants(or their ancestors) so it’s hard to define the originality of Canada. I might say that Pure Canadian figure is aboriginal ppl, but again, Mmm.. I guess you r saying that whity with English is the Pure Canadian huh? Wrong! Asians come here to experience asian stuff? Wrong! Ppl come here since there are lots of job and academic oppotunities. If you wanna work or study, do you go to Yukon? North territory?Even though there could be no ESL or a job?Right on! go for it.Well,,it must be good experience though. But,again, ppl are looking for what they want, not what you want or expect. If you believe honky culture in Canada is the best, you may consider going to Nova Scotia or sth like that. More east, you know. You’ll see more white ppl out there. enjoy your stereotypes and honky culture.
Res.11 by Terry toddler from 日本 2005/06/26 03:18:07

Hello Aki what do you mean when you say Honky cultre sounds really f**k? I agree of course people want different things but you sounds like the kind of experience im talking about is HOnky whatever that means? but i think very sad to think such natural experience of beauty & landscape could be labelled as Honky cultre? you say you may consider going to nova scotia or shit like that? what do you mean shit like that? your so rude & f**k to think such place could even be s**t? Academic oppourtunities & society is real bulls**t, I dont think God cares so much for the modern world, the natural earth is sacred mother nature.I lived in Japan on a commune@fuji san with international people we learned to live in Nature without worry of money & society & we could party all night long & stuff, its far more educating than academic bulls**t & rewarding too, them aboriginal & dude’s were far more advanced in there thinking than you or me & it’s cool America is of native indian origin too, peace love & light
Res.12 by aki from バンクーバー 2005/06/26 10:40:42

hey terry toddler. First, I have a difficulty reading your English. when did I say shit like Nova Scotia? I did say sth(something) like that. does this mean"SHIT LIKE THAT"?? I respect all places in Canada, man. maybe you should study Englsih first. I completely disagree with you. It is true, even though Canadian ppl have stereotypes and conciously or unconciously discriminate non-white ppl.Depends on who, yes, but there will always be hate crimes. why? We,including white& non white, unconciously admit the concept of White is superior to non-white. you know what I mean? maybe you don’t. Cool American? no they persecuted Aboriginal ppl. Now, also!(not actual killing but other means) I hate American, and like Canadian. I just can’t accept how americans behave in many ways. and you live without exsisting in society? no it’s almost impossible to be completely out of a society. why you party all night long? why you have friends? that’s b/c you are in a society. study English, Sociology, and History, then come back here.
Res.13 by Japanese from Vancouver 2005/06/26 12:05:17

It’s so funny that Terry Toddler have been pointed his inadequate English from many people. (I saw that in other message board as well.) I know some netive English speaker can’t use proper English. T.T. also mensioned that he lives in Japan, but I haven’t see him writing Japanese in other topic.
I want to ask T.T. "How can you live in Japan and not being able to speak Japanese? Do you think you understand Japanese culture when you don’t even speak the language?"

Back to Morgan’s question.
I like Vancouver because of its mild climate (especially summer) and many outdoor sports opportunities.
As someone already has mensioned, the beauty of mountains and oceans are unexplainable in words. And those nature is so accesible too. You drive 30 minutes from the city and you are at the mountain!

People here are so laid back, so you don’t feel guilty for leaving office at 5. I could enjoy my private life way better than when I was living & working in Japan.
I also enjoy getting know many different culture in Vancouver.
I’m Japanese, but it doesn’t mean I know other asian culture.
I could get to know many other asian culture since I came to Canada, and it was wonderful experience.
I also enjoy the companionship with European cultural people too, but I find it’s little more harder to be friend with them.
I don’t know why, but there is something which makes the friendship not so even. Well, may be it’s my inadequate English. Another thing about people in Vancouver is that people here know how to accomodate with people from other culture. Vancouverites are patient people. People here don’t treat me like I’m worthless because of my inadequate English compare to when I was in London or some American city.

I also appriciate many academic opportunities open for adults. I love the challange and Vancouver is the place where people encourage you to learn and improve yourself.

There are many more to talk about the greatness of Vancouver, but these are brief impression of mine. It’s the nature, climate, mixed culture, quality of life, and academic opportunity for me.
Res.14 by 無回答 from バンクーバー 2005/06/26 16:35:24

Morgan,
Canada is about multiculturalism and what makes this country so great is that it encourages you to keep your religion and culture of your native homeland. I see it as a place where people from all over the world get together and live in somewhat peace unlike our neighbors down south. I think you have the wrong "image" of Canada in thinking that it is mostly caucasians (whites) living here. My advice to you, try experiencing it for yourself first and don’t believe things that you only hear. There’s a reason why Vancouver is in the top 10 places to live in the world annually. I think res 13さん、has the right idea.
By the way, I have lived and worked in Japan, the US, and Canada.
Res.15 by 無回答 from バンクーバー 2005/06/26 16:38:15

Oops, I guess I never really answered your question....got off track. heh heh The pure canadian experience??? I say start from the west coast and go across the country. You’ll see differences and similarities in every province, city, or town. Try to hit smaller cities as well. Not just Vancouver, Montreal, Quebec, and Toronto.
Res.16 by 無回答 from バンクーバー 2005/06/26 16:55:20

Try proof reading your own material!
Yes, we too have poor English writing skills, and that’s probably due to the fact that once we get out of school everyone watches far too much TV.
Thanks for your warm tip.

Im sorry i completly dont understand Japanese i just saw (btw do you know what the word saw means)something about Grade 9 ?? my English is too native to be understood by people learning grammar, like you would say until but i would use til, so people in here got confused my English, I didnt learn grammar school was too boring for me i just had fun, But talking for me is no problem at all iv’e worked with different level’s of society, just my writing is awful, but anyhow unless you do a Job which requires writing English it’s not needed so much, Speaking is far better. Im in Japan because i live with my wife who is of course Japanese, i dont care so much i dont speak it because to speak with my wife is enough for me & the job’s i will do here i wont do if i need to speak Japanese. Even i like Japan so much since i was young i only speak some words to help get by? but still i enjoy Japan & its people its just enough ok ;)

Res.25 by Japanese from Vancouver 2005/06/27 21:32:17

Hmmm...Many people think Morgan is not native English speaker because his English is not formal which we Japanese people learn. But I think he IS native speaker. Some of my young Canadian friends write just like Morgan does.
Talking about ourselves, many Japanese people use broken Japanese too.

Morgan, I’m grad to hear that you enjoy the life in Japan.
It sounds you are surounded by nice people there.
I have many nice friends (Japanese and non Japanese people) here in Vancouver too. JPCanada does not represent how people are here in Vancouver. So, if you ever want to visit here, don’t be scared! ;)

P.S. Summer is arrived and it’s still bright at 9 in the evening here. It can get hot in summer but it’s not humid at all. No toss and turn nightmares exist here. I couldn’t handle muggy summer in Kanto area, so this is great for me.
Res.26 by 無回答 from バンクーバー 2005/06/27 21:49:36

Res.27 by 無回答 from バンクーバー 2005/06/27 21:56:31
