WRECK: Tour guide ran other vehicle off the Seward Highway.
Anchorage Daily News Published: September 5, 2006
The man charged with drunken driving after knocking a car off the road in an accident that nearly drowned a 5-month-old baby appeared in court Monday to hear charges that could land him in jail for many years.
Ryoichi Asao, 36, a Japanese citizen working in Anchorage as a tour guide this summer, was charged with drunken driving, first-degree assault for injuries to the baby and third-degree assault for injuries to the mother, who was driving.
Asao, dressed in orange jail garb and sporting shaggy brown shoulder-length hair, chewed on his lips and didn’t say much during the hearing, responding only to questions about whether he understood the charges and his rights.
At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Asao was driving south on the Seward Highway near Potter Marsh and tried to pass Kim Kennedy, 37, of Girdwood, who had a baby, Ellen, in the back of her Jeep.
Asao’s Chevy Suburban hit Kennedy’s Jeep, sending it off the right side of the road and into the water, where it landed upside down between the road and the railroad tracks. Asao’s car went into the marsh on the other side of the road.
Anchorage police credit helpful witnesses and one of their own, Sgt. Bob Glen, with saving the baby’s life.
Passing motorists stopped, rushed into the water, turned the car upright and helped the mother out. The baby had been trapped for about five minutes underwater and was blue and unconscious when the people who righted the car discovered her.
They pulled the baby out and handed her to Glen, who revived her with CPR while standing in the water.
The mother and baby were sent to the hospital, where the baby is in intensive care, according to court documents released Monday. Police said both are in fair condition.
Dave Kennedy, the husband and father of the victims, joined the courtroom on a speaker phone. He said his wife and daughter had been moments from death, and told the judge Asao "caused my family a lot of pain." The Kennedys, especially his baby girl, will have to work through problems from this accident for a long time, Dave Kennedy said.
Asao is held in jail in lieu of $25,000 bail and a third-party custodian. He is scheduled to appear in court again today for an indictment hearing.
