Why are you study English?
by 無回答 from 無回答 2006/08/23 09:32:28

I am so surprised to see so many Japanese people studying English when I lived in Japan. When I asked them whey they studied English, they said:

"For travel"
"To get a job in a foreign company", etc.

For me, they don’t explain enough because most of them don’t even need English when they travel, or their English level is too low to get jobs in foreign companies.

Is there any true reason why you guys are studying English? Also, I want to know why most Japanese who study English are girls, not boys.

I look forward to hearing your opinion.

English is now the language of the world. If a country is civilized, it most probably incorporates English in their education system. It’s too bad you think their English level is too low to get a job in foreign companies, but I’m sure this is a generalization as many Japanese people study abroad and sucessfully master the English language :) Foreign companies in Japan don’t require fluency as a native speaker anyways.

I also think you don’t need a reason to study a language. I study languages because it’s my hobby, not because it is a necessity.

As for why there are more girls than guys who study English, I once learned that it is easier for girls to learn languages because of their innate communication skills.

huh? What do you think?
You already speak English, so you don’t really need to learn any other language. But do you know how hard it is to travell if you can’t speak an official language of the country or English?
So, if you wanna travell all around the world, what do you think YOU would do if you didn’t speak English? Learn all the official languages of every country you wanna visit or just learn English, one of the easiest languages in this world?

As for why more girls study English, I believe it’s partly because men are forced to work so much that regular guys who have REAL jobs, not part-time jobs at 7-11 and shit, don’t have any time to study, while MOST women don’t work as much.
(Another reason I can think of is that Japanese women like Caucasian men for some reason, so they try to meet as many as they can by travelling, working here on working-holiday visa or working at "foreign companies" in Japan....)

P.S. As for the title of your topic, I have to ask: why aren’t YOU study"ing" English? :P

Well, I guess you are expecting the kind of answer...like because Japanese girls likes European boys?

Anyway, I agree with No.1. English(language) is a fun to learn especially for girls. It’s not happening only in Japan. You can see many translators in the world, and you can see most of them are girls. Also, usually baby girls are starting to speak earier than boys in all of the world.

And I could explain why Japanese people are not speaking English well. To speak English, of course we need to listen and speak many times to practice. But we have no chance to listen/speak English in Japan. There are not many native English speakers. Even if we are studing English at public school for 6 years, it’s just we are writing/reading on the desk and listening our Japanese teacher’s Japanese-like-English.

"For travel"
"To get a job in a foreign company", etc.

Japanese people who are studying English, they believes that they can do it one day. But actually(as you can see) it’s just a dream. It’s still difficult to learn English in Japan. We should go out of Japan to practice English and/or make some more English-speaking-environment.

As for me, it’s waste of time studying English "For travel" and "To get a job in a foreign company" because I am not interested in travelling to English speaking countries and get a job with bosses in a foreign company.

My motivation to study English was that I wanted to have good time with my hobbies, such as music gigs and footballs in UK, I can’t remembering how Japanese men lived in Japan, they seemed to be a kind of robot for me, they were so busy to follow English conversation school and try to get high score of TOEIC test for their work. Japanese society give presser a lot to men! Soooooo poor!!

My father wanted to me to live like a man, so call “specialist”, though he wasn’t rich, but he could offer if I wanted to get higher education, but my mother kept saying “it’s waste of money for women to get higher education because women have no chance to get higher positions and usually have no choice to get husband and children eventually”.

Later on, I found it was easy to live in Japan for women because many offices hire me if they can all incoming telephone calls from outside of Japan and operate Ms-Office, I usually got around 300,000 yen per month even I don’t have a degree, it’s because I could speak junior high school level of English? That’s terrible, don’t you think?

Now, I’m in Quebec of Canada and working, but get a job from Japan on Internet, I don’t use English and no boss at all, I speak French to my partner, so English is 3rd Language for now.

Oops! Sorry, I didn’t notice my spelling mistake in the title line.

Also, I am not a native English speaker, so please don’t point out too much about my spelling or grammar. I was just curious about Japanese people who are studying English.

Some replies ware pretty interesting, but I’m looking forward to hearing more from you guys.

Thanks!

The reason for learning English as well as which level they are in are all depends.

Unlike you said, in Japan, there are as many people who speak English pretty much like bilinguals as who don’t.
Not every English learner wants to get a job for a foreign company in Japan, either.
’their English level is too low to get jobs in foreign companies’, uh?
Again, it depends where and which kind of situations you’d met them or probably they are just on the way to improve their English, I assume. Or, maybe that is just the birds of a feather flock together thing?
Just out of curiosity, when, where and how long did you live in Japan?

So you’re mother tongue is not English, either, right?
Where are you from?
Are you a boy or girl?

Why do you study English in Canada?
Is there any TRUE reason why do you study English?
What do you mean by saying ’TRUE’ reason, anyway?

What about in your own country? Are there more boys than girls that learn English? And do they get any ’TRUE’ reason?
Why do you care Japanese who’s trying to learn English in Japan? You are not even in Japan right now. Tell me about your country’s situation. And let’s talk about it with comparing to Japanese English learning environments, all right?

No offence but I just wondered why you wonder such a thing.
Look forward to hearing your opinion very soon.

レス7さん、レス1の英語で何か間違ってましたか?大学で単位取れないって書いてあるけど、私はネイティブスピーカーだし、UBC Bachelor of Arts in English Honors
