Section 9(1) of the Citizenship Act says that:
A Canadian citizen may renounce his or her citizenship if:
• he or she is a citizen of another country or, if the application is accepted, will become a
citizen of another country;
• he or she is not the subject of a declaration by the Governor in Council under Section 20;
• he or she is not a minor;
• he or she is not under a mental disability;
• he or she does not reside in Canada.
