i am downtown

i am in vancouver. とかin を付けたりする時と付けないときの違いがわかりません。教えてください！
ばしょを説明するときの他の例もあれば教えてください。
お願いします。。。

自分がダウンタウンにいるのなら、I’m downtownかI’m in downtown Vancouver.
バンクーバーにいるならI’m in Vancouver.
I’m in downtownは間違い。
Downtownってお店の中にいるなら、I’m in downtownでOK。

Here’s my take on this:

(1) There’s nothing wrong with saying "I’m downtown."
(2) I suspect that people in New York say "I’m uptown."
(3) You need the "in" in "I’m in downtown Vancouver."

I think the reason is that the "down" and "up" in (1) and (2) act a bit like prepositions. In (3) "downtown" is an adjective modifying "Vancouver" so you can’t omit the "in"

(1)と(2)のup/downは前置詞みたいな役割を果たしているのではないかとおもいます。(3)ではdowntownは名詞ではなく、Vancouverを修飾する形容詞なのでinを省略できない。


　

So here’s another example of a place name with a preposition-like beginning: "Down Under" means "Australia"

Notice that in the title they don’t say "go to Down Under"? It’s the same reason you don’t put a "to" in "I’m going downtown tonight"
