I would prefer if you do not use "jap" when referring to Japanese or Japanese people because it is derogatory, so it is preferable to use JP as a abbreviation or fully type out Japanese.

Don’t worry..."Jap" is NOT offensive when you are using it to abbreviate "Japanese" unless you MEAN to make it offensive. Some people may find it offensive if you are using "Jap" to describe Japanese people, but when describing Japanese as a language, don’t worry. Your use of "Jap" is fine. Tell Super Nintendo Luigi to "jump in a lake". ;-)

Tak is sort of right, there, but not completely. A lot of people find the term "Jap" very grating on the ears. I know I do.
Also, anybody who doesn’t consider the term to be offensive when describing the people is up for a Douchebag Award. We locked them up once just for being themselves, and most of those locked up were Canadian citizens. And words like that helped to do it.
The most common and inoffensive abbreviation for Japanese is "Jpn". It works for both the people and their language.
But telling people to "go jump in a lake" is always fun.
Good expression, there, Tak.
"I’ll believe that when pigs fly" is another personal favourite.....
;)

It’s interesting, but I think most Japanese are not aware that "jap" is a racist term. Those that are aware should not use it, of course. I use "Jpnse" -> "Japanese" and "Jpn" -> "Japan."
Anyway, I hope you found a language partner. :)
