DRINKING WATER ADVISORY

Test results from a drinking water sample taken from your area were received today from the GVRD laboratory and indicate the presence of bacteria that could have adverse health effects.

The sample contained a small amount of fecal coliform bacteria, which is a broad indicator for the presence of human or animal waste. Our initial assessment indicates that the most likely cause is the contamination of the sample itself during filling of the sample bottle or at the lab during processing. Although this would indicate that water currently being delivered to your area is still safe to drink, the District of North Vancouver (DNV), in consultation with Vancouver Coastal Health, is not prepared to take any chances with the health of our residents.

Accordingly, we advise residents receiving this notice to boil water before use for drinking, brushing teeth, or washing fruit and vegetables.

water should be brought to a rolling boil in a pot (not a kettle) for at least 2 minutes and cooled with the lid on
alternatively, customers may consider using bottled water or adding 4 drops of household bleach per gallon of tap water, stirring well and waiting 20 minutes before drinking
it is not necessary to boil water to be used for washing or bathing when soap is used
This boil-water advisory will remain in effect until residents are notified (by notice delivery) that further testing has indicated that the water is safe to drink. Additional water sampling and testing has already begun, however it is anticipated that this process will take up to 72 hours to confirm that the water is safe to drink.

We apologize for any inconvenience, however this measure is necessary in order to ensure that the health of our residents is not compromised.

For further information call the DNV at 604-990-3861 or Vancouver Coastal Health at 604-904-6253 or go to www.dnv.org

North Vancouver District Drinking Water Advisory Lifted

North Vancouver, B.C. The District of North Vancouver, after consulting with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, has cancelled the Drinking Water Advisory which was imposed on approximately 500 homes this past weekend.

The District issued the advisory to the Riverside, Dollarton, and Mount Seymour Parkway areas, after a routine water sample tested positive for fecal coliform bacteria. The initial assessment indicates the water may have been contaminated during the sampling collection process. Three consecutive days of testing have shown no further contamination.

District staff will be hand-delivering notices to affected homes to advise that the advisory has been lifted. The information will also be posted on the District’s homepage at www.dnv.org.

“We apologize for any inconvenience the advisory has caused, however, this precautionary measure was necessary to ensure that the health of District residents was not compromised,” says Utilities Manager, Bob Huffman.

Although no other areas were affected by this advisory, for clarity, there are no longer any boil water advisories in effect for the general population in the District of North Vancouver.
