To the original poster: 私、生粋の正真正銘アメリカ人の男性ですよ。So you might be interested in my opinion. I agree with many of the others. Being fluent in English, ぺらぺらです、is not important. Yes, communication is very important. You need to talk about many things with your boyfriend. However, after living in Canada for two years, I am sure that your English is good enough. My ex is a Japanese woman. Her English was not so good. But with dictionaries and patience, we could talk about everything. Language was not a big problem for us. The big problem was that she did not want to spend the rest of her life in America. She did not want to raise children in America. This is the reason we broke up..... So if you and your boyfriend are happy together, then do not worry about being fluent. Your English will get better, 少しづつ。 And this is good enough. 十分ですね。 (I hope my Japanese is not too strange. :)
