Understanding Basic and Optional Auto Insurance
Knowing the ins and outs of your auto insurance is critical if you want to be properly covered. With auto insurance changing, now more than ever it’s important to not just renew, but review your auto insurance.
Up until now, you’ve probably never thought about your auto insurance as consisting of two separate types of coverage. This will become more evident later this year when ICBC will be required to provide you with two separate policies to reflect the separate types of coverage. This extra step allows you to understand what it is that’s mandatory to buy, and what it is that’s optional to buy. You might even save money!
But, in order to save money and get the coverage that suits your needs, you first need to understand the difference between mandatory (or basic) insurance, and optional insurance.
Basic coverage is mandatory in B.C. and is only provided by ICBC through its network of Autoplan brokers.
It includes coverage such as $200,000 for Third-Party Legal Liability for accidents causing personal injury to a third party or damage to their vehicle.
Basic coverage includes accident benefits for motor vehicle accident injuries; and Hit-and-Run protection for a limit of $200,000.
Basic insurance makes sure all B.C. drivers have some insurance, but most motorists still buy extra ‘optional’ coverage for their vehicles. Optional coverage is available through ICBC or from private insurers and includes:
Collision ? covers damage to your own vehicle as a result of impact with another vehicle, person or object.
Comprehensive ? covers damage to your vehicle caused by something other than collision, such as fire, theft or vandalism.
Excess Third-Party Liability ? varying limits of liability are available. BCAA recommends vehicle owners purchase a minimum of $3 million.
Knowing the difference between basic and optional coverage means you’ll be in a better position to find the right coverage for your insurance needs.
