Private Insurance
If you have a private insurance program, you are generally able to add your portion of the medical costs into your medical expenses. This includes the insurance cost you pay each period, such as each week or each month, and your portion of the bill.
“If insurance covers a portion (of medical expenses), you can claim the portion paid by the patient, plus any premiums,” Mahboubi says. For example, on a $100 expense where the insurance pays $80 and the patient pays $20, the $20 portion is deductible.
