1. Security Screening

* Checked baggage containing items that are prohibited onboard an aircraft may be opened by authorized security screeners for further inspection.
* If further inspection is required, guests departing a Canadian airport may be contacted by security to be present during the inspection of their baggage. Guests departing a U.S. airport will not be contacted.
* Your attention to what items are considered restricted will help in expediting the checked baggage screening process and will minimize the potential that you or your baggage will be delayed.
* Please refer to the following sources for more information on what you can - and can’t - take on your flight.

Transport Canada pre-board security screening:

* Allowed : Liquids, gels, or aerosols in containers 100 mls / 90g (3.4 oz.) or less. These containers MUST be placed in one (1) clear, closed and re-sealable plastic bag no larger than one litre (one quart). ONE BAG PER PERSON.
* Prohibited: Unsealed, open, or opaque plastic bags of any size with liquids, gels, or aerosols in containers of any size. Liquids, gels, or aerosols in containers larger than 100 mls / 90 g (3.4 oz.).
* Items exempt from restrictions (these items must be declared to security screeners) - Baby formula, baby food, and milk for guests travelling with children two years of age and under and prescription and essential non-prescription medicines. These items do not require a plastic bag, but may require additional screening.

For more information on these or other Government of Canada security requirements please visit www.tc.gc.ca or www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca or phone 1-888-294-2202.

Special items :

* Identification - should be packed in carry-on baggage.
* Medication - Please take any medication you may need on the flight with you. All medication in carry-on baggage should have a professional pharmaceutical label on the container. Medical syringes must have the needle guard intact.
* Keys - Keys may be packed in carry-on baggage, however they may not hold any item which is prohibited. Please refer to Transport Canada’s listing of Permitted and Prohibited Items.
* Jewellery - should be packed in carry-on baggage.
* Wrapped items - Wrapped items may be opened for inspection when brought as carry-on. Please leave your packages unwrapped.
* Musical instruments - although seats may not be purchased for instruments, we will accept small instruments as part of the carry-on baggage allowance. Exceptions may be made for irregular sized instruments, however all instruments will be stowed in the overhead compartment, under the seat or in other approved locations. This is left to the discretion of the cabin crew and customer service agent upon checking the flight and baggage loads. Instruments may also be accepted in checked baggage when they are properly packed. Applicable excess fees will apply.
* Seafood or perishables: If you are planning to bring fish, seafood, or perishable items, please contact our Sales Super Centre directly for packaging information.
* Camera film should be packed in carry-on baggage, as screening machines for checked baggage may affect film. Film below ISO 800 won’t be harmed by carry-on screening machines; however, you can request a hand inspection.
* Home-made alcohol: Home-made alcohol is not permitted in checked baggage or as carry-on baggage, as the alcohol content cannot be verified.
* Electrical devices :
Cellular telephones cannot be used at any time while in flight.
Any lap top computers or electrical items will need to be removed from their carrying case at the security gate and will be x-rayed.
The following electrical devices are permitted onboard: Voice recorders, calculators, laptop computers, handheld CD players, handheld electronic devices, computer games, and photographic equipment.

Tips on preparing your checked baggage:

* Please pack fragile items carefully to prevent damage.

* Keep all loose handles, hooks and straps closed securely if you can, or remove them. These can catch on conveyors and belt loaders and cause damage to your baggage or other guests’ baggage.

Delayed or Damaged Baggage

WestJet successfully carries baggage for thousands of guests’ each and every day and has one of the lowest mishandled baggage ratios when compared to North American carriers. Sometimes though, despite our best efforts, baggage may be delayed or damaged. Please read below for information on the steps we will take with you to make things right.

WestJet’s Delayed Baggage Promise:

* Delayed baggage must be reported to a WestJet Customer Service Agent within one hour of arriving for domestic flights, and 24 hrs for international flights.
* Our agent will create a Delayed Baggage Report for you. You’ll be asked for contact information, and a description of your baggage and contents to assist in the search.
* Most delayed baggage arrives within 24 hours but if you have reached your destination, and your baggage has not been recovered within 24 hours, you will be authorized to spend up to $25 a day for 3 days to help cover the cost of incidental expenses while we continue to search.
* During the first 3 days, our Airport agents will search for your baggage, and after the 3rd day, the search will be taken over by our Central Baggage Services Team Team.
* A member of the Central Baggage Services Team will contact you to collect more detailed information to assist them with an intensive secondary search.
* In rare cases where the bag is not recovered within 30 days, the Central Baggage Service Team will settle your claim up to WestJet’s maximum liability of $250, excluding interim expenses of up to $75 (for flights within Canada) and up to 1,000 Special Drawing Rights, including incidental expenses, for international flights.
* If the value of your bag contents exceeds WestJet’s liability, you may wish to consider purchasing baggage insurance through your own insurance company, prior to travel.

WestJet’s Damaged Baggage Promise

WestJet does everything possible to ensure careful baggage handling, but occasionally baggage or contents can be damaged during the sorting and loading processes.

* Damage to baggage or contents must be reported to a WestJet Customer Service Agent within 24 hours of your arrival for domestic flights or 7 days for international flights.
* Our agent will ask you to fill out some documentation and report the problem immediately.
* When damage is reported and deemed the result of negligence or accident on part of WestJet or its representatives, you’ll be offered either immediate settlement with a Future Travel Credit equal to the cost of repair, or we’ll arrange to have your baggage repaired at our cost.
* Guests reporting damage at a Charter destination will have a damage report taken and asked to check with a Customer Service Agent when they return to Canada .
* Please ensure items are securely packed to avoid damage, breakage or spillage.

Please note: For domestic travel, WestJet’s maximum liability for lost or damaged baggage and lost contents as a result of damage is $250.00 per person, per incident. For international travel, WestJet’s liability will be limited by either the Montréal or the Warsaw Convention, as applicable. In most cases, the limitation amount will be 1,000 Special Drawing Rights. WestJet assumes no liability for (but not limited to) fragile, valuable, or perishable articles including money, jewellery, cameras, video and electronic equipment, silverware, negotiable instruments, business documents, samples, antiques, paintings, furs, manuscripts, or similar items.
